Sarah Dyke, Liberal Democrat MP for Glastonbury and Somerton, has called on the new Labour government to reform the business rates system and save the high street.
On the first day back in parliament after the summer recess, she questioned the government on business rates during Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government Oral Questions.
Ms Dyke pointed out that the current system is "outdated" and discourages businesses from setting up in market towns, including Wincanton.
This, she said, leaves many high street premises empty, harming community pride and denying local councils the benefits of thriving town centres.
Ms Dyke said: "The outdated business rates system disincentivises local businesses from setting up shop and helping to support our local economy.
"The Liberal Democrats have been calling for reforms to the system, and it is about time the new Government takes the necessary steps to revitalise our high streets."
The Labour government had promised in their manifesto to reform business rates, but have yet to take action.
Ms Dyke's call for change highlights the urgent need for reform to support local businesses and communities.
