SOMERSET Council has "committed" to addressing road safety issues on Somerset A roads, including a Frome accident blackspot.
Anna Sabine MP for Frome and East Somerset met with members of Avon and Somerset Police and Somerset Council on Friday, September 6, to discuss road safety issues - including the "dangerous" A361 junction with A362.
A fatal collision occurred on the A361/A362 junction near the Frome Asda superstore in late August and was the latest in a "long line of accidents on the road and the fourth on the junction in 10 months", Anna said.
Both Avon and Somerset police and Somerset Council "shared in Anna’s concern" and have agreed to "some immediate measures" that will be implemented "in lieu of a bigger plan to address the issue", the MP said.
The "intentions" put forward in the meeting include better signage and road markings, new warning signs to alert drivers to potential dangers, and cutting back vegetation which could hinder sight lines.
Anna said: "Road safety is one of my key priorities as an MP and I regularly hear tragic stories from constituents about how it has affected their families.
"I am so pleased that Somerset Council has agreed to make some short-term improvements at this dangerous junction and I’ll continue to press them for a longer-term solution here and at other accident blackspots."
She added: "Whilst bigger changes to road layouts are being looked at to help tackle the alarming number of fatalities on the roads, it is hoped the new interim measures can help to reduce the risks to road users and increase visibility around the area whilst funding for larger plans is pursued."
Anna stated that last week's meeting was the first step of a continued effort to address the risks affecting so many constituents.
