FROME'S former Shoe Zone has sat empty for seven years and new plans could see it transform into a house of multiple occupancy.
The building, at 22-23 Market Place, would offer 12 people "affordable rent" in a co-living space in the centre of Frome.
A planning application submitted by Vernon Estates states that the house of multiple occupancy (HMO) would "deliver a more affordable, but high-quality form of accommodation for residents of Frome".
It reads: "It is well known that the rental market is difficult and becoming more expensive and limited for those on lower incomes.
"This HMO will offer 12 people the opportunity to live in the centre of Frome for a more affordable rent when compared to other forms of residential 22-23 Market Place, Frome, BA11 1AN 10 accommodation."
The space above the former Shoe Zone was previously used for "ancillary storage and office accommodation", and would be transformed into a flat housing 12 people.
To encourage a "new tenant" to take up the retail unit below the flats, Vernon Estates plans to upgrade the unit with a new shopfront and the option to divide the space into two units, to "increase the likelihood of finding end tenants".
The HMO will consist of 12 bedrooms, each with an ensuite. Plans also show a storage space for up to 12 bikes.
Freddie Vernon, owner of Vernon Estates, said: "There’s just nowhere affordable in Frome for people to rent, and there is too much expensive housing.
"Young people are being pushed out of their home town because of the current rental crisis.
"Everyone complains about the price of rent, but I’m going to try and do something about it. No one has touched this building for years because it’s very difficult to make it work financially - it’s a risky project to take on."
He added: "I’m also very much looking forward to opening the doors to the ground floor retail area after all this time. It’s been empty for far too long."
