A recent sponsored walk has raised over £5,000 for a Taunton hospice's day centre.

The St Margaret’s Hospice Care Taunton Sunflower Stroll, held on Sunday, September 15, 2024, created a space to remember loved ones, enjoy nature, and raise money for the Sunflower Day Hospice Centre.

The four-kilometre walk, starting at Longrun Meadow, attracted 120 participants, who enjoyed the views and fresh air.

The stroll concluded at the hospice in Bishop’s Hull. Here, walkers planted sunflower markers in memory of their loved ones. They also enjoyed afternoon teas, glasses of fizz, and cakes from Mademoiselle Desserts, a Taunton bakery.

The hospice gardens, filled with greenery, echoed with the tunes of the Rivertones Harmony Chorus, adding to the day’s community spirit. The Sunflower Day Hospice Centre offers specialist support to people who live at home but need additional care.

The centre’s services range from group talking sessions and physiotherapy to arts and crafts and spiritual guidance. The centre plays a vital role in the health and happiness of its users.

The money raised from events like the Sunflower Stroll helps to maintain its operations.

Louise, a cancer patient since January 2018, is one such beneficiary. Initially frightened by the idea of a hospice visit, she found comfort in the staff’s experience and compassion.

Louise said: "The other patients made you feel like you were part of their family.

"Now, every time I go there, I try to stay as long as possible."

The Sunflower Centre’s work relies on charitable donations and community support. The funds raised from the Sunflower Stroll will help the centre continue its important work.

St Margaret’s Hospice Care expressed gratitude to all who took part and contributed to the fundraiser.

The hospice continues to rely on community support and donations to keep providing its essential services.

Events manager, Merle Harrison-Croft said: "We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the participants of Sunday’s stroll, as well as everyone who sponsored them. Thanks also go to Mademoiselle Desserts for their exquisite cakes, and the Rivertones Harmony Chorus for their excellent music. Finally, we must not forget to express gratitude to the brilliant volunteers, without whom St Margaret’s work would not be possible”.
