A YEOVIL man who was found to be more than three-times over the drink drive limit when he hit another vehicle is to be sentenced by Somerset Magistrates next month.

Alex Gullis was unsteady on his feet, slurred his words and tripped over the kerb when police told him to get out of his car in Preston Road in the town.

He failed a breath test at the roadside and a second test at the police station revealed a reading of 113mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35mcg of alcohol.

Gullis, 35, of Plover Court, admitted an offence of drink driving on July 20 when he appeared before Somerset Magistrates.

Giles Tippett, prosecuting, said the police were called to the scene of the accident and found the defendant who was driving a Vauxhall Corsa which was responsible for the collision.

“Gullis was unsteady on his feet, swaying and tripping over the kern and his speech was slurred,” he said.

“A roadside breath test was positive and while at the scene he said the only reason he hit the other car was because some cats had run out into the road and he was a cat lover.”

Defending solicitor Greg Peters said the case needed to be adjourned for a pre-sentence report to be prepared as the Probation Service was considering the imposition of a mental health treatment programme.

He said: “At the time he was going through a whirlwind of emotional events which culminated in this incident, and this is totally out of character as he has no previous convictions.”

The magistrates adjourned the case until October 29 for a report to be prepared and imposed an interim driving ban.
