GLASTONBURY has got a new pharmacy despite that never seeming likely in recent years.
Announced by Glastonbury’s well-known town crier, Mr David Greenway, Glastonbury Pharmacy comes in at a difficult time for pharmacies in Glastonbury.
Two Glastonbury pharmacies closed last year, with the opening of a new pharmacy delayed due to an appeal.
The addition of ‘Glastonbury Pharmacy’ now makes it two pharmacies in the town.
Pharmacy provision has declined over recent years, with the equivalent of ten local pharmacies closing their doors every week between January and April 2024.
Glastonbury Pharmacy opened on 21 September, in an event where David cut the bandage to announce the new chemist.
Glastonbury’s MP, Sarah Dyke, tabled a parliamentary motion demanding increased pharmacy provision in Glastonbury on her first day as an MP two months ago.
Speaking about the “broken NHS”, Ms Dyke said: “Last year two pharmacies shut down in Glastonbury, leaving only one remaining, which clearly cannot serve the needs of a town of this size.
“I am delighted that plans to open another pharmacy in Glastonbury can now go ahead, but it is clear we need greater support for pharmacies to avoid more closures.”
