WHEN in Taunton, I’m always thinking about where the best place to get a burger is that’s tasty, close by and cheap enough that I don’t feel ripped off after buying it.

Working from home this week, I decided to see if I could order some lunch online that would help settle my stomach.

Available for a fair price of £9.95, I opted for Eat the Bird’s lunch deal, where I got a snack burger and fries.

I got a smashed burger layered with crispy onions, fine-cut pickles, cheese, and a ssamjang sauce – all put into a Hobbs House wild bun, accompanied by a portion of chips and a soft drink.

The molten cheese-topped burger was paired with 42 chips and a Coke Zero. (Image: Harry Mockridge/Newsquest) To me, the burger was juicy and full of flavour with the ssamjang Korean sauce, helping give it that added taste.

The onions were cooked well, and I was a big fan of the chips I received (42 chips exactly is not bad as far as I’m concerned).

Personally, I would’ve preferred more meat, if possible, but I expected that as I chose the smashed burger option - and for the price it was more than fair.

The highlight of the meal for me was the delicious cheese on top.

Much better than your average plastic American cheese topping, Eat the Bird beat my expectations for how good they could make a smash burger.

Other options available in the deal are two chicken tenders with fries and a drink or a chicken burger with fries and a drink for £9.95.

There are also some attractive plant-based options available.

Eat the Bird in Taunton has always been on my radar, having lived in Taunton for over 20 years, but I usually stick to their chicken options – noting their double dip burger accompanied by their mouth-watering cheese Louisiana fries as my usual order.

This may have to change however I will keep looking to see if there is a better burger that can top Eat the Bird (which will be very hard to do).

The Lunch Deal at Eat the Bird is available Monday to Friday, from 12pm to 4pm.

A particular cool event they are running right now is “Wing Wednesday”, where wing enthusiasts can get their hands on chicken wings for £1 a wing or £1.50 if you want a boneless option.

The multi-award-winning burger place has locations in Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter and Taunton offering “Chicken burger places for those who seek out flavour that slaps hard.”

If you have an Eat the Bird restaurant near you or manage to catch them at an event where they are showing off their award-winning food, then I highly recommend you give it a try, as I can personally say their flavour does slap hard.
