THERE’S always time for cake, and when in Taunton. What better than to support a local business that sells a sweet treat which can also be considered art?
After watching the popular Netflix show, ‘Is It Cake?’, I decided I wanted to try the closest thing I could get to one of the magnificent creations.
Living in Somerset and not America, you’d think that finding a cake as detailed as a bouquet of flowers would be impossible, but after scouring around on social media, I found Susie’s Bakehouse.
Sue Higgins runs Susie’s Bakehouse, which doesn’t have a physical bakery where she creates her floral masterpieces as she bakes from home.
Specialising in creating cupcake bouquets, you can either get a classic bouquet or a premium bouquet from the Taunton baker.
I decided to opt for the premium bouquet option, so I could see just how lifelike Sue’s flower cakes look.
After picking it up from her house in Blackbrook, I was immediately gobsmacked to see how much the cupcakes looked like flowers.
Placed in a circular formation, the cakes are put into plastic cups and pinned together to create a realistic bouquet look. I didn’t want to dismantle the bouquet as it looked so good and made me think: is it a cake?
Taking my first bite, I immediately knew it was 10/10.
Despite the thick icing (which I understand is needed to create the floral design), I am a fan of the cake for it being so different to the other types of cakes available in other stores around Taunton.
Hands down this is one of the better cakes I’ve tried, almost equal with the brand Cake Box, which sells egg-free cakes.
A highlight for me is the fact that although the cupcake is a basic vanilla cake, the sweetness in the icing to go with the fluffy bake is a perfect balance.
I believe Susie’s Bakehouse cupcakes are a delicious and aesthetically pleasing gift that's perfect for someone special.
Sue should be proud of her bakes and I thoroughly recommend anyone tries them and gets in touch with her via her Facebook page.
You can get your hands on the premium cupcake bouquet I ordered (which includes seven beautiful cupcakes) for £33.50.
A full-price list for all the available cupcake bouquets is available online on Susie’s Bakehouse Facebook page.
Named a winner in the prestigious 2024 International Buttercream Bloom Awards, the global competition attracted talented bakers from around the world, Sue got to showcase her incredible buttercream flower creations across four seasonal categories: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter.
This year, the competition saw an outstanding 37,000 votes cast across 210 entries.
Each voter was allowed only one vote per category, making the competition fiercely competitive and ensuring that each vote truly mattered.
Susie’s Bakehouse has won multiple awards at the Buttercream Bloom Awards including a platinum award in the Autumn category and silver in three other categories.
Speaking proudly about her award at this year’s Buttercream Bloom Awards, Sue said: “Winning a Buttercream Bloom Award is such an honour for me.
“It’s also a massive confidence booster, especially for me who has seriously lacked this in the past.
“Thank you to everyone who voted for me, to the sponsors, to Rockpool and of course to Jane for organising these awards and allowing all bakers to gain the recognition they deserve.”
