THERE’S a new kid on the block when it comes to pasties in Taunton. The freshly opened Cornish Bakery shop on Fore Street offers a refined experience and is already turning heads.
Located at 7 Fore Street, this brand-new shop opened today (Tuesday, October 1) and has revitalised the interior, bringing a spice of Victorian décor to a building that has remained dormant for months. You wouldn’t know that it used to be a former bank; all traces of stale corporate design have disappeared. Instead, it’s dominated by an original glass domed skylight feature, restored to its former glory with pastel colours and a tree planted below. Inside, the 205 sq. metre property also hosts extensive seating for up to 58 people at one time.
Aside from the architectural wonders, Taunton’s new Cornish Bakery offers a diverse range of pasties, pastries, hot drinks and sweet treats. Although a lunchtime meal deal doesn’t technically exist in the shop, I opted for the next closest thing – a traditional Cornish pasty and a latte, costing a grand total of £8.05, to takeaway.
The customer service at the shop was impeccable. It took less than three minutes for the friendly and accommodating staff to sort my order. I was most impressed by the number of staff on shift. What’s especially nice is that the new bakery will create 15+ year-round local jobs whilst supporting the Taunton community through a partnership with a local charity, to be selected by the new bakery team, and announced shortly.
The pasty I tried for this review was a good bite to eat, with hints of black pepper, a fair balance of meat, potato and onion, and excellent attention to detail with the crimping. There was a slight limit to the range of pasties on offer; perhaps a sweet option would tempt customers? The latte was also tasty, although a little on the small side for the price. If I’d had more time, I would have opted to sit in to soak up the atmosphere.
The Taunton Bakery Manager, Sarah Balls, and the team, are ready to welcome customers from 8am - 5pm every day of the week. I’d strongly recommend dropping by to experience it for yourself.
