A yellow weather warning for heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning is now in place over Somerset.

The 12-hour warning is from 10am this morning (Tuesday October 8), until 10pm tonight.

The Met Office says: "Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected during Tuesday, with some localised disruption possible."

It comes straight off the back of another warning on Monday (October 7) for heavy rain and chance of hurricanes in Devon and Somerset. Read more: Yellow weather warning issued for most of the south west.

Residents should expect a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus

Some flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely, leading to some damage to buildings or structures, especially across the southeast of the area where highest rainfall most likely.

Flood alerts for rivers in East Somerset was issued on Monday morning, people can keep an eye on new alerts on their website. Flood alerts and warnings - GOV.UK.

A spokesman for the Met Office added: "Probably some damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes

"Delays to train services are possible. Some short term loss of power and other services is likely."

In September, a record 163.3mm of rainfall fell across Somerset. This is 130% more than the long-term meteorological average.
