WESTON-SUPER-MARE station was closed for most of Friday morning (October 11) after a signalling fault on the line.

Great Western Railway (GWR) and CrossCountry reported the fault at around 7.30am, which meant trains were being terminated at Worle.

Network Rail engineers arrived at around 9am and were working to fix the problem, which was resolved at around 11am. But delays to trains continued until around 2pm.

Many commuter trains were cancelled, revised or delayed from Bristol, Taunton and through to Exeter while the fault was fixed.

A spokesman for GWR said: "A fault with the signalling system at Weston-super-Mare means all lines are currently closed. As a result, trains are unable to run between Worle and Weston-super-Mare. Services will be cancelled or revised."

The routes affected included: Between Weston-super-Mare and Avonmouth / London Paddington / Severn Beach, between Exeter St Davids / Penzance / Plymouth / Taunton and Cardiff Central, between Taunton and London Paddington / Severn Beach, also between Penzance / Taunton / Weston-super-Mare and Bristol Temple Meads.

Customers were advised to use a rail replacement service, run by First Group at no extra cost if travelling to Weston-Super-Mare, Worle, Nailsea & Backwell (Crossroads), Bristol (Bus Station) or Exeter.
