A FLOOD alert for East Somerset rivers has been issued at 4.35pm today (Friday, October 18) saying "flooding is possible, be prepared."

The flood alert area includes rivers Brue, Sheppey, Glastonbury Millstream and North and South Drains: Find a river, sea, groundwater or rainfall level in this area.

Flooding of roads and low lying land is possible as rivers react to the rain which is forecast between 11.00pm and 4.00am tonight. Property flooding is not expected.

Areas most at risk include the B3151 Glastonbury to Meare Road.

Overtopping is forecast from the Glastonbury Millstream and the River Brue at North Drain and Westhay.

The River Brue is forecast to be bankfull upstream of Bruton Dam with field flooding likely.

Weather conditions are expected to improve on Saturday, before a further band of rain arrives early on Sunday.

A spokesperson said: "Heavy rain is expected tonight, and rising river levels may lead to flooding.

"We are monitoring rainfall and river levels, and staff have been clearing debris from weed screens and checking rivers for blockages.

"Please monitor local water levels and weather conditions, and avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses."
