MORE than 200 flood alerts and warnings have been issued by the Environment Agency across the country, including several across Somerset. 

In most instances, updates are scheduled for 2pm this afternoon. This roundup page will be updated thereafter.

Red Flood Alerts

River Axe and Chard Junction

A RED flood alert has been issued this morning (Saturday, 19 October) for property flooding at Chard Junction, Axe Farm, Coaxdon and Weycroft Cottages, Mosterton, Clapton, Tytherleigh and Broom, Axminster (Stoneybridge).

Heavy rain falling in the East Devon area overnight has caused the River Axe to rise.

The Environment Agency said: “Flood waters may be deep and fast flowing in these areas. People in this area should consider taking action now and install any property flood resilience measures.”

Portishead and Portbury Dock

High tides were expected to cause flooding last night (Friday, 18 October).

Areas most at risk include the coastline between Portishead Point and Avonmouth including Portishead Ashlands Nature Reserve and the Royal Portbury Dock. Tidal conditions are expected to improve over the weekend. We are closely monitoring the situation and checking flood defences.

Pill and Shirehampton

High tides were also expected to cause flooding last night (Friday, 18 October) in Watch House Road in Pill, and the Station Road area in Shirehampton.


Amber Flood Alerts

Frome and Mells

Rising river levels this morning (19 October) may lead to flooding. Flooding of roads and low-lying land is possible, but property flooding is not expected.

Flooding is forecast to affect locations near the Somerset Frome, River Mells, with low lying land and roads expected to be most affected, particularly around Feltham Lane at Frome, the A362 at Wallbridge, the access road to Peradins at Freshford and the Westwood to Freshford road.

Bankfull conditions are forecast at Farleigh Hungerford with a risk to property at Nunney, Vobster and Spring Gardens near Frome.

Bridgwater, Burnham-on-Sea and Weston

A flood alert was issued last night (October 18) for potential tidal flooding. Areas most at risk include coastal and tidal areas at Minehead, Combwich, Bridgwater, Burnham-on-Sea, Uphill, Weston-super-Mare, Kewstoke, Sand Bay and Kingston Seymour.

Porlock Weir

High tides on Friday evening and on Saturday morning may lead to flooding. Areas most at risk include the coastline between Gore Point and Hurlstone Point including Porlock Weir.

The tidal forecast at 8.30am this morning was with a level of 6.59m height above average sea level. Stay away from beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads, as large waves and sea spray could be dangerous.

West Somerset streams

Flooding of roads and low-lying land is possible when river levels are at their highest between 11pm and 4am tonight. Property flooding is not expected. Flooding is forecast to affect locations near the Horner Water, River Aller, Washford River, Hawkcombe Stream, Monksilver Stream, and Doniford Stream.

Weather conditions are expected to improve tomorrow, before a further band of rain arrives early on Sunday.

Exmoor rivers

Flooding is possible from Friday evening into Saturday morning as rivers remain high following recent rain, with further rain forecast into the weekend.

Catchments are wet and rivers are expected to remain high, leading to flooding of low-lying land and roads into the weekend. Affected areas include: the Upper River Exe from Exford to Exebridge, the Rivers Barle, Lyn, Mole and Bray and their tributaries, and coastal streams from Combe Martin to Lynton.

River Tone

An alert was issued last night on 19 October 2024, with flooding is forecast to affect locations near the River Tone, Hillfarrance Brook, Halsewater Stream, with low lying land and roads expected to be most affected, particularly around roads around Hillfarrance, Bradford on Tone, Lane End Road at Ham and the Creech St Michael to Henlade road.

River Parrett and River Isle

Flooding of roads and low lying land was forecast from last night (18 October 2024).

Areas most at risk include roads at Ashford Mill, Isle Brewers, Fivehead, the Norton sub Hambdon to Stratton road, the A356 and the B3165 at Chiselborough and the B3168 at Ilford Bridges. The lower River Parrett is forecast to be bankfull and overtopping could occur.

Muchelney and Thorney

Flooding is likely to  affect the road from Langport to Muchelney if the drain level exceeds 7.3m; the road from Muchelney to Long Load above 7.86m; the road from Muchelney to Thorney above 7.93m; and the road from Muchelney to Draycott, Law Lane, above 8.8m. Property flooding is possible above 8.35m.

River Yeo

A flood warning was issued last night (18 October 2024), with forecasted flooding in small parts of South Somerset. Locations affected near the River Yeo, including Sparkford to Weston Bampfylde.

River Chew area

River levels are forecast to rise on the Winford Brook and the Chew Stoke Stream because of yesterday’s rainfall. Flooding is forecast to affect locations near the River Chew, Winford Brook, Chew Stoke Stream, with low lying land and roads expected to be most affected, particularly around the fords on Mill Lane and Pilgrims Way in Chew Stoke and The Batch and Dumpers Lane in Chew Magna.

North Somerset area

Rising river levels this morning may lead to flooding. No property flooding is expected. Flooding is possible from 9:30 AM on 19/10/2024, and is forecast to affect locations near the Congresbury Yeo, with low lying land and roads expected to be most affected, particularly around roads at Wrington.

Clevedon

High tides on Saturday morning may lead to flooding. No property flooding is expected. Areas most at risk include the coastline between Gullhouse Point and Marine Parade.

Lower Tone and Parrett Moors

An amber flood alert remains in place for Lower Rivers Tone and Parrett including West Moor, Hay Moor, Curry Moor, Stan Moor, Salt Moor and North Moor.

There is a risk of water overtopping Haymoor flood storage area and affecting Curload and Stan Moor if this level reaches 8.30m.
