Sarah Dyke, MP for Glastonbury and Somerton, has backed a landmark bill to put the UK back on track to meet climate and nature targets.
The Liberal Democrat MP was an early supporter of the Climate and Nature (CAN) Bill and has been an active advocate for it.
She had previously championed a similar bill, putting forward a motion to Somerset Council to declare an ecological emergency in 2022.
With the Climate and Nature Bill—proposed by Liberal Democrat MP Roz Savage—now selected to be presented in Parliament, it stands a chance of progressing further.
If passed, the legislation would update the UK’s climate and environmental policies in line with international commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reverse nature loss by 2030.
Mrs Dyke said: "I’ve long been a proud supporter of the Climate and Nature Bill.
"It represents a real chance for genuine, impactful action on hitting these climate targets, which are critical to the future of the planet."
She added: "The last government’s complacency and inaction cost us dearly, both in real terms, and in reputation internationally.
"I’m so pleased a fellow Liberal Democrat colleague is now pushing this forward, with cross-party support from so many engaged MPs."
