TAUNTON Brewhouse has addressed concerns regarding its future after Somerset Council's budget revealed it would cut all funding to the venue by April 2025.
As part of its annual budget approved in February, the council agreed to phase out its annual grant to the Brewhouse Theatre. It has cut £13,000 in the current financial year and will cut a further £119,000 in 2025/26.
Taunton Brewhouse said in a statement: "The theatre can confirm that it is working closely with both Somerset Council and Taunton Town Council to develop a plan that supports the long-term sustainability of the venue."
Somerset Council has pledged to do all it can to support a Taunton theatre.
Val Hammond, Chair of Board of Taunton Theatre Association Ltd, says: “Whilst work on the detailed arrangements is ongoing, the Board of Taunton Theatre Association believes that the outcome will see a secure future for Taunton Brewhouse, enabling it to continue to serve the community for many years to come.”
Taunton Brewhouse added: "Advance ticket monies are held in savings accounts, thus earning interest for the charity as well as offering assurance. In the meantime, shows are already booked into the theatre throughout 2025 and 2026, with Taunton Brewhouse continuing to provide a broad programme of live events, cinema, activities and exhibitions, with the theatre’s café and bar playing an increasing role. Staff are also working hard on this year’s Christmas show, Pinocchio, which hopes to attract record numbers.
"Taunton Brewhouse appreciates the support and enthusiasm of its friends and patrons and remains committed to serving as a cultural hub and vibrant part of the local community."
Brewhouse is run by Taunton Theatre Association Ltd, a registered charity and company limited by guarantee that was set up in 2013 to ensure the continued work of Taunton Brewhouse.
Since reopening in April 2014 and up until March 31 this year, the theatre welcomed 487,852 people to take part in or see 6,557 events, despite closures during Covid.
