TEN years ago this week, one fortunate Taunton local was surprised to see their amethyst necklace and earrings go for five times the estimate at auction.
"Feverish bidding" broke out at auction when the Victorian amethyst gold set Riviere necklace and earring set went under the hammer in Lawrences Auctioneers in Crewkerne, for their October 2014 fine art sale.
The seller, from the Taunton area, had been told to expect the stunning necklace to fetch between £1,000 and £1,500.
But they were delighted to watch it race past the original estimate almost five fold, leaving the seller £4,780 better off.
Auctioneer Simon Jones said at the time: "Jewellery continues to make very strong prices in auction, and our Quarterly Fine Art Sales are always very popular with private and trade buyers."
