WRANTAGE'S The Canal Inn is a "treasure" on the Somerset Levels, and now diners can enjoy its "unbeatable" Sunday lunch all day long.
The independent bar and restaurant has extended its Sunday serving hours, with food available from 12pm to 7.30pm so diners can enjoy a late Sunday roast in front of a roaring fire during the winter months.
Award-winning chef and owner Ollie Purvis' "faultless" Sunday lunch has excellent reviews, with options including an "impeccable" 40-day dry-aged sirloin of beef, confit port belly, roast chicken with stuffing, or nut roast and a Yorkshire pudding.
Each roast at The Canal Inn is served with "finger-licking" gravy, cauliflower cheese, honey and mustard roasted carrots, and seasonal greens. A two-course Sunday lunch is £27, and three courses are £33.
Sharing options include an "amazing" beef Wellington for two [£90] which must be pre-ordered 48 hours in advance, a roast board to share [£30pp] or a 1kg Tomahawk steak [£75]. Also on the menu, subject to availability, is “outstanding” surf and turf, seafood, and lobster.
The restaurant uses "only the finest local ingredients" and that’s clear to see, with a dry-curing meat fridge and lobster tank on display inside the tastefully refurbished 200-year-old inn.
Chef Ollie told the Gazette: “Who doesn’t love a late roast with our open fire to warm you up after a welly walk on the stunning Somerset Levels? Sundays are so much better when you're eating a Wellington.
"Let us cook you the best roast you will ever have, sat in front of our log burner. Book in advance to avoid disappointment.”
The Canal Inn, located four miles from Junction 25, has earned a Travellers' Choice 2024 award on Trip Advisor, with hundreds of enthusiastic reviews rating it “excellent” for its “first-class” food, local real ales, beer garden, and “friendly and professional staff”.
Booking ahead is recommended, call 01823 480210 or book online at thecanalinn.com. Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options are available. The pub has a private dining room for group bookings of up to 30, perfect for Christmas parties and celebrations.
Diners can enjoy lunchtime fish and chips for a tasty £12.95 on Thursdays and Fridays until the end of November.
