TWO Somerset pubs have been honoured as places for the best pub lunch in Britain by food experts.

The season of hearty comfort food is upon us and where better to tuck in than a cosy country pub? The experts at Sawday’s have selected 40 venues to tempt your taste buds.

Sawday's is a company that offers a collection of independent hotels, B&Bs, inns, and self-catering accommodations in the UK and Europe.

Sawday's aims to find authentic places, that have character, and are creative, and to help support the local communities and owners of the properties.

Within the top 40 list, two Somerset spots have been highlighted - with of them being one of England’s oldest inns.

The Swan

Listed in the top 40 pubs for Britain's best pub lunches for autumn, a spokesperson from Sawday's spoke about The Swan, they said: "The Swan is gorgeous; a contemporary take on a village local.

"It’s part of a new wave of pubs that open all day and do so much more than serve a good pint.

"Come for breakfast, pop in to buy a loaf of bread, then return for afternoon tea and raid the cake stands. It’s right on the bustling street, with a sprinkling of tables and chairs on the pavement in French-café style.

"Push inland to find an airy restaurant open to the rafters that overlooks the garden. Here you dig into Tom Blake’s fabulous food (he’s ex-River Cottage), anything from grilled Cornish herring to a three-course feast.

"Lunch is priced from £10; a three-course dinner is around £30, and a Sunday lunch is priced from £17.50."

The George Inn

The George Inn, Somerset, has made the top 40 best pub lunch list. (Image: Google Maps) Situated in Norton St Philip, Somerset, The George Inn is the other pub highlighted for serving one of the best punch lunches in Britain.

Speaking about The George Inn, a spokesperson from Sawday's said: "This is one of England’s oldest inns and you feel it the moment you walk through the door and step onto uneven flagstones in narrow corridors under low beams.

"Tapestries and heavy chandeliers complete a look that makes you wonder if you should address the bar staff in your best olde English, and the menu is packed with pub classics like black pudding Scotch egg and perfectly cooked steaks.

"Lunch, dinner and Sunday roast are priced from £9.50-£25.95."
