The election of Donald Trump as US president represents a "dark and worrying development" for the world which must now fight more than ever for strong liberal values, said Gideon Amos,  MP for Taunton and Wellington.

“While, of course, the UK government needs to work constructively with the new US President, for many people in America and elsewhere this election result is a dark and worrying development," Amos said. “It's more important than ever that we now strengthen our links with our European neighbours once again."

The MP's thoughts were echoed by the Liberal Democrats in general.

“The world’s largest economy and most powerful military will be led by a dangerous, destructive demagogue," a spokesperson for the party said. “The next president of the United States is a man who actively undermines the rule of law, human rights, climate action, international trade, and global security.

"Millions of Americans, especially women and minorities, will be fearful about what comes next. We stand with them."

It was a time for like-minded people believing in liberal values to come together, Amos stressed.

“Standing up for strong liberal values has never been more important.”
