A PRISON in Somerset is offering people "the perfect holiday outing for families" this Christmas period.

HMP Shepton Mallet, sometimes known as Cornhill, is a former prison in Shepton Mallet, Somerset, England.

When it closed in 2013, it had been the UK's oldest operating prison, following the closure of HMP Lancaster Castle in 2011.

Now over 400 years old, the prison has been revitalised after hosting a range of seasonal events alongside escape rooms which people can partake in.

An announcement to close the site to the public in November 2023 caused uproar, but came due to a "disheartening lack of support" to safeguard the prison by the previous owners, according to Cove Group CEO, Joel Campbell.

However, the "landmark deal" announced on Wednesday, August 7, guarantees the future of Shepton Mallet Prison for years to come.

Speaking about the festivities at Shepton Mallet Prison, one of the organisers of their Christmas event said: "Get into the festive spirit this holiday season with a range of exciting Christmas activities at Shepton Mallet Prison - the perfect holiday outing for families.
