Sarah Dyke, MP for Glastonbury and Somerton, has demanded establishment of pollution baselines and targets after shocking sewage spill statistics.

Thames Water data revealed Glastonbury and Somerton was the 16th worst constituency in England and Wales for sewage spills.

It prompted Ms Dyke to call for action in Parliament last week.

The government has announced plans for a new Water Commission to review the industry, but the Liberal Democrats believe this is insufficient and more urgency is necessary.

They are advocating for a replacement of the water regulator with an industry watchdog that can hold water companies accountable.

Ms Dyke, a long-time proponent of cleaning up Somerset's rivers and streams, believes establishing pollution baselines and targets is an actionable first step towards accountability: "It’s shocking that Glastonbury and Somerton is one of the worst constituencies in the country for sewage spills.

"Proper oversight of the water industry is well overdue, and our precious waterways simply cannot wait any longer.

"This is actionable quickly, and would go a long way to reducing or halting the immediate problem, while we work together to reform the industry."

She suggested long-term solutions like empowering the regulator, or transforming water companies into public benefit entities.
