TAUNTON Town Council have agreed to upgrade CCTV cameras to improve coverage of particular hotspots of antisocial behaviour.
The council said some outdated analogue CCTV cameras, for example the ones in Castle Green, will be upgraded to digital.
Councillor Bev Fernandes, chair of the Community and Place committee, said: “Thanks to the work of our Street Marshal, we are gaining a clearer understanding of antisocial behaviour hotspots in the town centre.
“It is recognised that the CCTV coverage in Castle Green for example could be improved, serving both as a deterrent and as a tool for local police.
“As a town council we are committed to doing what we can to help keep our residents and businesses safe and secure and consider this investment to be of benefit to the community as a whole.”
In February this year, the town council agreed to subsidise three services that could have been scrapped due to Somerset Council’s financial emergency.
These included funding for CCTV (with relevant Service Level Agreement to be delegated to the Clerk to agree), Vivary Park Gates opening and closure, and funding for the Tourist Information Centre.
