THE LAND around the new Wellington Station could be decorated with a slab of the Wellington Monument, if plans submitted this week is approved.

Document 43/24/0105 is an application for the appearance, landscaping, layout and scale for the station square including hard and soft landscaping, mobility hub and siting of the Wellington Monument pyramidion on land north of Taunton Road, Longforth Park, Wellington.

The public space will be outside the proposed new railway hub which MP for Wellington Gideon Amos is currently campaigning for with the Department for Transport and Parliament.

This week, he held a second meeting with the Rail Minister to make sure the railway station is still going ahead.

It is key that the new train station can be readily accessed by all users with a variety of pedestrian cycle links through the proposed development linking with surrounding residential areas as well as along the main boulevard access route.

It will be a multi-functional space with the opportunity for temporary food / drink stands/ events and potential pop-up markets.

The space will also have seats and landscaping around it, which the application says will make it 'more appealing' to anyone visiting it.

Cycle paths towards and away from the station and a new bus stop will enable an integrated transport link to the village.

The space will lead train users into the new Wellington Train Station, if that is given the go ahead by councillors and the MP.

The top stone pyramid of the pre furbished Wellington Monument will act as a key feature central to the space.

A key part of the space, will be the cap on the Wellington Monument, which needs to be replaced. It will be taken down from the statue and placed in the middle of the public space outside the new railway station.

Visit Somerset Council's planning portal to read all the detail, you can also leave comment on what you think of them on there.

Plans were submitted on Monday (November 11) and will be reviewed by Somerset Council planning officers before a decision is made to approve or refuse them.
