A 17-year-old girl who died after fleeing a police vehicle and being struck by a car on the M5 motorway has been named.

The formal identification process has been completed this afternoon (Thursday, November 14) following the death of a teenage girl in a collision on the M5 in Somerset earlier this week.

Tamzin Hall, aged 17, from Wellington, died in a collision with a vehicle that was travelling southbound between junction 24 (Bridgwater) and junction 25 (Taunton) shortly after 11pm on Monday, November 11.

She had exited a police vehicle that had stopped on the northbound side while transporting her, moments before the incident.

The teenager got out of the stationary vehicle and was hit by a car on the southbound carriageway.

Following this incident the M5 was closed in both directions from the J25 in Taunton to the J24 in Bridgwater.

"Our thoughts and sympathies go out to Tamzin’s family for their devastating loss," A spokesperson for the Avon and Somerset police said. "A specially-trained family liaison officer remains in contact with them to keep them updated and to provide support."

A mandatory referral was made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, which is now carrying out its own internal investigation into what happened.

“This was a truly tragic incident and my thoughts are with Tamzin’s family and friends and everyone affected by the events of that evening," IOPC director David Ford added. “We are contacting her family to express our sympathies, explain our role, and set out how our investigation will progress. We will keep them fully updated as our investigation continues."

The IOPC's role is to independently investigate all the circumstances surrounding this incident.

The family have asked for privacy at this difficult time.
