A TAUNTON-based business owner, who grew up on a farm, expressed her support for farmers protesting in London today against changes in inheritance tax law.

Sue Higgins, founder of Susie’s Bakehouse, based in Blackbrook, Taunton, said people should advocate for farmers and support local markets where they can.

"British farmers are not just producers of food; they are stewards of our environment, custodians of tradition, and vital contributors to our communities," she said. "This heritage is not just about food production; it’s about resilience, hard work, and a profound respect for the land."

The local baker creates a variety of sugarcraft creations but is recognised for her realistic looking floral bouquet cupcakes.

Higgins won an award at the prestigious 2024 International Buttercream Bloom Awards earlier this year.

Higgins, who grew up on a farm in Somerset with her family, said she didn't fully appreciate the value of doing so when she was younger.

"I don’t usually get involved with political views and opinions but this is something very personal to me," she said. "As farmers descend on Westminster today to help protect their futures and those of generations to come, we must also recognise the hard work they do to cultivate the land and maintain our rich agricultural heritage.

She asked people to reflect on where their food has come from, particularly if they are enjoying a meal with British ingredients.

"So next time you enjoy a meal made with British ingredients, take a moment to reflect on the journey that food has taken from farm to table," she said. "Let’s advocate for our farmers, support local markets, and cherish the heritage they represent."
