A RECORD wind gust of 76 mph has been recorded at Yeovilton in Somerset – the first time since 1990.
Strong winds have hit Somerset as a result of Storm Bert, which made landfall on Friday evening. Winds of 60 mph were expected for coastal areas, with the latest recording inland at Yeovilton a surprise for meteorologists and weather watchers.
The record of 76 mph recorded on Sunday, November 24, 2024, was matched only by one other location in the UK, at Berry Head in Devon.
The extraordinary wind speeds have been accompanied by an excessive amount of rainfall from Storm Bert. In some parts of Somerset, 130 millimetres of rain has been recorded.
Storm Bert has brought disruption to the county, including road closures, localised flooding and train cancellations.
The county has also seen fallen trees as a result of the high windspeeds.
