TEN YEARS AGO one of the biggest days in the Taunton calendar saw thousands turn up to watch the Christmas light switch-on.
On Sunday, November 23, 2014, locals flocked to the town centre for the festive event, which offered fun and entertainment from 10am until late, with a 6pm switch-on.
This year, however, adverse weather put a spanner in the works as Taunton's WinterFest 2024 was called off due to Storm Bert.
A spokesperson for the event said: "We regret to inform you that due to the adverse weather forecast for Sunday, November 24, Taunton’s WinterFest has been cancelled.
"The safety of our performers, contractors, traders, and all attendees is our top priority.
"Taunton's magical Christmas lights will be illuminated from tomorrow [November 24], so please be careful should you decide to venture in."
"We truly appreciate your understanding and continued support. Thank you for standing with us through this difficult decision, and we look forward to welcoming you at Taunton’s WinterFest 2025."
Hundreds of people had been expecting to attend the festive event.
Taunton Town Council said on Monday, November 25: "Although sadly Taunton's WinterFest had to cancel their event, we didn't want the lights to go unloved.
"The Mayor of Taunton, Councillor Vanessa Garside, braved the weather to bring a little Christmas joy to a blustery evening."
