TWO Taunton schools were visited by the MP for Taunton and Wellington, Gideon Amos, as part of UK Parliament Week.

The Liberal Democrat met pupils at both Parkfield and Pyrland on Friday morning.

Following the visit, Gideon said: "Knocking on doors during the General Election campaign, it was clear that quite a few people didn’t fully understand our general election system.

"Therefore, I’m pleased that schools across Taunton and Wellington have been doing all sorts of activities to learn about Parliament."

Gareth Jones, Headteacher of Parkfield Primary School, said: "During a special celebration assembly, Mr Amos congratulated pupils on their achievements and spoke about the significance of democracy, community involvement, and the role of Parliament in shaping our society.

"Following the assembly, he joined our school council for a lively question-and-answer session.

"Pupils had the opportunity to discuss important topics, while gaining valuable insights into the work of an MP.

"Mr Amos encouraged everyone to stay engaged and informed about the democratic process, making his visit a memorable and inspiring highlight of UK Parliament Week."

Kat Lam, Head of Social Science at Pyrland, is also the Curriculum Lead for Aspire, its co-curricular programme.

She said: "During this term, Aspire pupils have been considering 'Who do The Arts belong to?' As part of this, they have discussed the patronage of The Arts and if public money should be spent on arts projects.

"We were lucky to be joined by Jack Clements, Artistic Director for TYCA (Taunton Youth and Community Arts) and Gideon Amos, who fielded some interesting questions from the students.

"We thank them both for their time, it really enriches the experience of the students who are on this programme when they can engage with external speakers."
