A WEDMORE solar firm has helped install panels onto 100 homes in the village in a bid to cover 60 per cent of properties before 2030.

Green Wedmore established the Solar 1000 Campaign in 2021, with the mission of installing 1,000 solar roofs in the village by 2030, covering 60 per cent of homes.

With the help of Wedmore-based business, Sunlit Solar, the village now boasts 260 solar-powered homes, which is 16% of the community.

Sunlit Solar alone has contributed 100 of these installations, representing over 700kW of solar capacity. This is equivalent to saving 379 tons of CO2, powering 2887 lightbulbs or planting 8837 trees.

Managing Director of Sunlit Solar, Mike Rogers, reflected: “As a local business rooted in Wedmore, we’re proud to help our community embrace a lower-carbon lifestyle while enabling real cost savings and empowering local initiatives.”

Aside from solar installations, the business also has also provided community contributions. This includes the donation of a 10-panel solar array to the Wedmore Scout Hut, enabling the Scouts to install a Tesla Powerwall 2 at cost.

The system, with a capacity of 3.7kW and an estimated annual generation of 3,186kWh, has already saved the Scouts approximately £1,000 in electricity costs—reducing their bills to less than a quarter of previous levels.

Additionally, Sunlit Solar is working with the Scout Trustees to set up a Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) tariff, allowing the Scouts to earn money by sending excess electricity back to the grid, further enhancing their journey toward energy independence.

Other places to benefit from recent community contributions include the Isle of Wedmore Bowls Club, Blackford Village Hall, Wedmore Playing Fields and Wedmore Village Farm.

To find out more about solar power, Sunlit Solar will be running ‘Cider and Cheese' event on the February 6, 2025 at Blackford Village Hall.
