A TEXACO petrol station is being investigated after reports of "petrol contamination" in Wellington.

A spokesperson for Texaco, which placed yellow ‘out of use’ signs on a number of affected pumps, has confirmed a probe is now underway after an issue was identified at its garage on Longforth Road.

The yellow out-of-use signs have remained at the Longforth petrol station since yesterday evening (November 27) and are still in place today.

Some people who use the petrol station have stated that they think the petrol has been mixed with water causing cars to make "spluttering" noises after leaving the garage.

Gas (petrol) and water do not mix. Water will settle to the bottom of the tank and get sucked into the fuel system of the vehicle, where it will fill and coke the pumps and injectors—and stop the car from running - costing hundreds of pounds to fix.

According to the Wellington Weekly, a person, who asked to remain anonymous, said around £50 of petrol was put in his car before being quoted around £170 for repairs from one company.

Four affected unleaded petrol pumps remained out of service today (Thursday, November 28), while all diesel pumps were still in service.

A Texaco spokesperson said: “We have been made aware of an issue regarding the Longforth Road Service Station.

“This has been raised with the independent retailer that owns and operates the site, who are undertaking an investigation.”
