An exhibition celebrating the life and legacy of Walter Bagehot is set to go on display in Somerset this summer.

The event will take place on Saturday, July 4, and Sunday, July 5, at Great Bow Wharf in Langport, the former headquarters of the Stuckey & Bagehot shipping business.

The Langport & District History Society said the exhibition will feature original artwork and images exploring the story of Langport’s most illustrious citizen.

Janet Seaton, chair of the society, said: "As the song says, a picture paints a thousand words.

"Whether or not you’ve heard of Walter Bagehot, this exhibition is a rare opportunity to get to know him and his life through illustrations.

"It’s an easy way to learn more about a local celebrity whose reputation is built on words."

The display will include the original artwork featured in the society’s new book, Walter Bagehot: Life and legacy, with illustrations by artist Mike Sammons.

A former teacher at Huish Episcopi Academy, Mr Sammons described the project as an "irresistible challenge."

The exhibition will also include a showreel of images exploring Bagehot’s work and family, as well as his personal travelling briefcase.
