A new story-time adventure is coming to Taunton this weekend to delight children and families.
Waterstones in Taunton will host a special reading event for young book lovers on Saturday, June 13, starting at 10am.
The event will feature Bosun Bob the Salty Old Sea Dog, the popular picture book character from Devon-based author Erin Allgrove.
The event comes as Ms Allgrove celebrates the release of her latest book, The Adventures of Seagull Scruff, a story about a mischievous seagull with a lot to learn and a big heart.
Ms Allgrove said: "Scruff was inspired by the behaviour of real gulls, from their scavenging in town centres to their acrobatic flight and intelligent foraging techniques.
"Seagulls are hugely clever creatures and often hilarious to watch.
"Scruff’s character is bold, cheeky and adventurous — but underneath it all, there’s a lot of heart.
"I hope children fall in love with him the same way readers have with Bosun Bob."
The Adventures of Seagull Scruff follows Scruff’s journey to find friendship and purpose, with themes of kindness, belonging, and finding one’s place in the world.
Ms Allgrove is best known for the Bosun Bob series, which follows the adventures of a salty sea dog, his loyal ship’s cat Pearl, and a host of coastal characters.
Her stories are filled with humour, warmth, and maritime magic, making them favourites among children and families.
Orlando Murrin described the new book as "a hilarious and heart-warming yarn about growing up and the power of friendship".
Children’s author Chris McGuire also praised the book.
He said: "The book is lovely, brilliant illustrations, and a heartwarming story. I'm sure kids will love it."
The Adventures of Seagull Scruff is expected to appeal to families, gift buyers, bookshops and coastal retailers across the UK and internationally.
The event at Waterstones is free, with no booking required.
