Drivers on the M5 are being warned to expect delays today (Thursday, June 11) as police escort convoys are taking huge wind turbine blades from Avonmouth to Exeter.
Avon and Somerset Police said they are supporting the safe movement of four blades, each around 75 metres long.
The abnormal loads are being moved in two convoys, with two blades transported at a time.
They are travelling at about 45mph, which is expected to cause slower traffic in places but no full road closures.
A police spokesperson said the size of the blades meant the operation required “careful planning and coordination” to ensure they could travel safely on the road network.
They added that abnormal loads need detailed route planning to navigate junctions, bridges and other infrastructure safely.
“We work with partners to help manage these movements, reducing risks to other road users and helping minimise disruption wherever possible,” the spokesperson said.
The first convoy left Avonmouth at 8.30am and was due to reach Exeter around midday.
A second convoy is scheduled to depart at 1pm.
Commenting on the conditions, the force said: “It’s certainly not ideal weather for moving 75-metre wind turbine blades, but these carefully planned movements still need to take place.”
