THE chairman opened the May meeting of the West Somerset Cornish Association with a welcome for everyone and introduced the speaker for the evening, Mrs Margaret Adams.
The title of her talk was “Living with the Boss”, the boss being her husband. Margaret has been a farmer’s wife for over 40 years. She began by telling us that she was the seventh child of a seventh child, which might account for her amazing way of telling stories, all in verse.
Margaret was a nursing sister at a Bristol hospital, when she first met her husband, earning the princely sum of £10. Her husband a farmer’s son, but between them they saved and bought a house and a field and over the years expanded and now have a 100 acre farm. Her fascinating stories were all about life on the farm, so funny and entertaining it kept everyone in fits of laughter.
She said “The boss” loved the farm so much, he would never leave it and go on holiday, so Margaret went with her girl friends, we heard more wonderful stories about her travels and holidays. She ended by telling us a lovely, but sad story about how “The boss” went into hospital with a heart attack. About the same time some cows had been sent to market to be sold. After the boss has had his operation, Margaret kept ringing the hospital to see if he was alright, she was very worried, but was told to ring again in the morning . First thing she rang and they said he was awake and she spoke to him over the phone, “are you alright?” and in a squeaky voice he said “I am alright, how much did the Heifers make?”
Margaret was thanked for her very interesting and delightful talk.
Refreshments were served and a raffle was held, after which Peter informed everyone about what was happening over the next three months, all outside events. Members meet again in September in the community hall, Taunton Fields.
