THE February meeting of Minehead WI was particularly well attended, as not only had the January meeting been cancelled due to the bad weather, but this meeting was a celebration of the Institute’s 87th birthday. President Norma Austin opened with a warm welcome to the many members present and introduced the speaker, Diane Atkins, who gave a most interesting and informative account of what it is like to be a magistrate. She was thanked for her enlightening talk by Enid Bulley.
A tea break then followed with birthday cake being served, during which time members were able to look at the competition entries and the various activities available.
After tea break, Norma introduced six new members and presented the two annual cups. The Berkeley Cup went to Enid Bulley for her unstinting service to the WI, and the Competition Cup was won by Betty Taylor for the highest number of marks gained in the monthly competitions over the year.
The group lunch will be at The Old Ship Aground on March 9 and the nearest Spring Roadshow will be at Oake on April 19, for which transport will be arranged if there are sufficient numbers.
Norma presented birthday posies to 12 members and announced the competition results: 1 Kay Rowe, 2 Betty Taylor, 3 Doreen Payne.
The next meeting will be at the Catholic church hall on Friday, March 12 at 2.30pm. William Cann will give a talk on Music for everyday folk. Visitors are welcome.
