MEMBERS of the Mid Devon branch of UNISON, the public sector trade union, have been 'signing up' to the union's Million Voices for Public Services campaign, being run nationally.
To show their support for the campaign the local union branch has agreed to sponsor one of Mid Devon District Council's floral roundabouts, at Bolham Road in Tiverton.
Brian Williams, the union's branch secretary, said: “UNISON members across the country want to see changes that put people before profit, and public interest ahead of private greed.
“I have signed up to the campaign because I know how important and vital the services we provide are to the people of Mid Devon every day.
“There seems to be a 'race to the bottom' among politicians to see who will promise to cut public services the most after the general election, and this is just not acceptable when bankers are still receiving millions of pounds in unearned bonuses.
“We are asking all of our branch members to add their voices to the campaign, and hope that this sponsorship will help get the message out there so members of the public will add theirs too.”
Across the country UNISON branches have held a series of events to promote the campaign, and many famous celebrities and public figures have 'added their voices', including Sir Alex Ferguson, Dennis Skinner MP, Billy Bragg, boxer Amir Khan and comedian Eddie Izzard.
The local campaign was launched last Friday outside the Phoenix House council offices in Tiverton.
