TEAMWORK between South Somerset District Council and the Langport Area Development Trust made for a successful open event last weekend at which more than 35 Polish people working at Romford Wholesale Meats were welcomed.

The event, organised by LADT, was aimed at providing helpful information about Religion, Education, Language Courses, and the social side of living in Somerset. Translation services were organised by South Somerset District Council. District and county councillor, Cllr Derek Yeomans, attended the event.

He said: "It is imperative that these dedicated and hard working people are given our support in helping them integrate into our society.

"The most sought after support is for English Language training, which we hope can be organised in the near future."

Amongst key information translated into Polish was on early years and primary education.

Vice-chairman of LADT, Paul Heim, said: "Having met Jane Plough, the human resources manager at Romford Wholesale Meats, it is clear just how difficult life is financially for people in Poland.

"These employees have taken the initiative and are trying to improve their lives, often leaving their own children at home with their extended families.

"We were pleased to welcome them to the area, and I particularly want to thank the district council, for their help in making available a translation service to provide key documents.

"The district council knew exactly who to contact, and what to ask for, and even contributed towards the cost of the translation service."

The open weekend took place free of charge in the lower school hall of Huish Episcopi School, a key focal point for many people in the Langport community
