IT WAS captains to the fore at Taunton Vale Golf Club last Saturday when the Captains' Inauguration Day competition took place (writes Richard Walsh).
In the 13 years of its existence the club at Creech Heathfield has become well established on the Westcountry golfing map and can boast a membership of 750.
Over 130 of the current membership took part in the Texas Scramble competition for teams consisting of three men and a lady and despite the time of the year the weather and course conditions were good and led to some keen competition.
At the end of a most enjoyable day the winners were husband and wife team Chris and Kevin Lewis who joined up with former club captains Pete Lang and Brian Parkes to return to the clubhouse with 57 points.
In second place were Lynne and Nigel Gridley, handicap secretary Mark Coleman and Mark Popham who scored 57.4, with past lady captain Joy Jordan, Rob Harris, Ian Case and Lee Carter in third place with 57.8 points.
The new ladies and men's captains Helen Harman and John Paterson teamed up with immediate past captain Alan King and club professional Martin Keitch to score 58.1 which put them in fourth place
Carole Paterson, Mike Bright, Andrew Wilson and Richard Taylor scored 58.6 points to finish fifth after countback over the back nine holes.
