GOONHAVERN 6 PORTHLEVEN 0
THIS was a thumping 6-0 defeat for Porthleven at Reen Manor, but the Fishermen will reflect on a result that could have been much different had they not given the home side such a helping hand.
The home side did not even have to work hard for their goals as Porthleven gifted them over half the total.
Andy Mills was unavailable and Daniel Stidwell was called into the first team, so the Fishermen were a little stretched. However, they acquitted themselves well in the first half and played some tidy football with Dean Bray going close in the 14th minute when he burst through from midfield only to see his shot smothered by the 'keeper.
Two minutes later the Fishermen failed to clear a corner, but goalkeeper John Sullivan saved the shot with his feet from eight yards.
Porthleven always looked capable of creating chances and Craig Bray had a good shot from the edge of the box tipped round the post for a corner.
The only goal of the first half came after 29 minutes when a free kick into the box went loose and Dean Bray sliced the ball into his own net.
Goonhavern's 'keeper made a fine save from Paolo Lopez's free kick, but ten minutes into the second half Sullivan dropped a cross and Alex Arquati had the simple task of knocking the ball into the net.
Port hit back with a terrific shot from Dean Bray that rattled the post with the 'keeper beaten, but disaster was just waiting to happen again when Phil Hancock headed a cross over Sullivan into his own net.
Substitutes Sean Johnston and Gary Braunton began to liven things up for Port, but ten minutes from time Goonhavern added a fourth goal when Ian Walkergave Sullivan no chance when he beat him with a great shot from the edge of the box.
Paul Curnow, who otherwise had a sound game for Port, got caught in possession in the box to give Arquati the chance to snap up the fifth goal and five minutes from time Lee Hawkey drove a shot from a short corner through a crowd of players and into the corner of the net.
"We didn't play as bad as the score suggests," said manager Gary Pascoe. "We created several opportunities, but our cause was not helped by our players providing Goonhavern with most of their goals. They didn't really have to do too much to win the game.
"But we are not a bad side and I'm sure the lads will bounce back. We had put together quite a good little run, but Penryn will be quite a test for the team."
