PORTHLEVEN 1 LISKEARD ATHLETIC 0

THIS Carlsberg SWL had all the makings of a 0-0 draw, but in true Roy of the Rovers style, a substitution ten minutes from time proved to be the most astute move of the match.

Daniel Stidwell, a youngster who would normally be learning his trade in the Jollys' Combination League side, took the chance to make a name for himself when he repaid the manager's faith in by snapping up the winning goal.

It was his first SWL goal for the Fishermen and one that was welcome with open arms.

For much of the game it was all about effort rather than finesse with both midfields working hard to cancel each other out, but of the two sides the visitors had the better of the chances and were only denied by a fine performance by goalkeeper Richard Keith.

In fact, Liskeard might have taken the lead in the 18th minute when Neil Robinson should have done better from Gary Williams' corner, but he miskicked in front of goal.

Lee Harvey also an opportunity, but he headed over the bar following a good run and cross by John Dawe.

Simon Webb's corner was cleared by Ian Stephens, but Webb delivered the ball back into the box only for Andy Sargent to head wide when he should have done much better.

The hard-working Robbie Powell shot wide from Clarke's free kick, but Porthleven were fortunate to escape minutes later when Keith missed his kick from a Lee Ireland backpass, but some how Harvey failed to hit the open goal from a narrow angle.

Port were creating chances, but were guilty of not testing the 'keeper or even getting them on target with Sargent again heading wide, but it was Keith who again came to Port's rescue when he made a fine finger-tip save from Nick Senior.

He followed that with another point-blank save from Harvey, but Port had their share of bad luck with Powell getting on the end of Webb's free kick and driving the ball against the crossbar.

The second half saw the visitors have much more of the possession, but like Porthleven when they did manage to finish on target they found Keith in impressive form with a string of fine saves keeping Port on level terms.

Sargent had half a chance but shot weakly at Dave Philp and that was the last part he was to play in the game as ten minutes from time Stidwell came on in his place.

Five minutes later Stidwell was celebrating when following the best move of the match Doncaster made ground on the flank and beat several defenders before squaring the ball to Stidwell who sidefooted the ball into the net for the winner.

It ws the last real action of the game and left the Porthleven supports toasting victory and a first SWL goal for Stidwell.

Porthleven have no game on Saturday.
