I found interesting reading on Page 29 of the Camborne-Redruth Packet (January 14) concerning the spelling of Camborne using the letter U on the Conservatives' web-site. More interesting were the comments of Labour MP Candy Atherton. I quote: "Unfortunately, I have often come across people misspelling Camborne but was shocked that the local Conservative Association should be one of the culprits. Clearly their core beliefs do not include accurate spelling or local knowledge and it is probably time they went back to basics again. It is my belief that they should learn how to spell!"
Some time ago, I was in correspondence with Ms Atherton over a particular issue and here I must thank her for the assistance she gave me at the time. However, I kept the correspondence I received from her and this is where my interest lies in relation to her comments quoted in the previous paragraph.
The first item of correspondence was an acknowledgement card received from her office at the House of Commons, in response to my initial enquiry - it is addressed to me at my home residence with the town spelling as CAMBOURNE!
The second item of correspondence is a subsequent letter to my initial enquiry (this concerned the non-arrival of payment cheque, which was due to me from a Government department). The letter to me, from Ms Atherton MP on House of Commons headed notepaper, refers on three occasions to the word CHECK instead of CHEQUE. R R Trevennen, Tregarland Close, Camborne.
