CORNWALL travel to Aldershot on Saturday to play the Army in what is a must-win game if they are to have any chance of winning their South West Counties Championship group.

Defeat in midweek by the RAF was a blow to manager Ray Nicholls' hopes because defeat in Saturday's game will almost certainly spell the end of the county's hopes for another season.

"I was disappointed that we didn't win the game against the RAF," said Nicholls "but I wasn't disappointed with the performance.

"We played very well, took the lead, but we fell down defensively because we couldn't defend from corners. The RAF only had three corners and scored from two of them and apart from that we controlled the game.

"There wasn't a lot wrong with what we did, but now we play The Army in what is now a must-win game.

"The Army and Sussex have both played two games and won two, but Sussex are in Jersey on the same day and if we and Jersey both win, then the group is right back in the melting pot."

One of the major problems for Nicholls is that although he knows what squad he wants, he can't be sure of what squad he will have available until after this week's midweek games.

St Blazey are playing Callington on Wednesday, Porthleven played Penzance on Tuesday evening, and Bodmin Town are playing Newquay.

"I can envisage Thursday being a hectic day," said Nicholls. "You hope the players will come through these games without an injury, but it doesn't leave much time to replace them when the clubs have midweek games."

Whatever squad Nicholls names, he says he will have every confidence in them to do the job: "We played the Army last season and won 4-2, so I will be going into the game in confident mood.

"We have to be realistic and realise that if we lose this one that will be it, but if we win, our next game is away to Sussex in March and that could also come down to being a group decider.

"First and foremost is Saturday's game. Once that has been played I will have a much better idea of what our chances will be."
