CORNISH Hospices chairman Nick Barwell has laid down the gauntlet by inviting thrill seekers to join him in a new year dare.

The hospices are launching an exhilarating challenge as part of their annual abseil event, which this year takes place off the Marks and Spencer building on Truro's Lemon Quay. Intrepid participants will have the chance to take part in a "zip-wire" from the roof of the 100ft building.

People are attached to the zip wire by a harness and then launched from the top of the roof, arriving on the ground in seconds.

Mr Barwell, who heads the board of trustees of Mount Edgcumbe Hospice, in St Austell, and St Julia's Hospice, in Hayle, said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for all those armchair thrill seekers."

The fund-raising event is being held on Saturday, March 20. Further details are available on 01726 874513.
