TRURO Cathedral's chief executive has denied that his new plans "damn" how the building has been run in the past.

Richard Glover was appointed last year as the cathedral's first-ever chief executive, with a remit to streamline day-to-day running and improve income.

But while his arrival has been welcomed in many quarters, he said: "I have heard some say that I am damning how the cathedral has been run in the past. Nothing could be further from the truth."

In February's Cathedral journal, The Coracle, he says: "Many old hands will tell you that some of the things proposed in my plans simply put matters back to where they were before... We are moving to a new phase of development that builds on what has happened here before."

Mr Glover has identified three key objectives at the cathedral: to restructure to improve communication and management; to balance the books; and to develop the cathedral quarter.

He writes: "Our financial difficulties have been widely reported and are truly threatening to the future of life at the cathedral. However, our budgets and business plans aim to tackle the problems head-on.

"With continued support we should be able to provide financial stability over the next two years, removing current deficit."
