Cornwall Athletic Club's Kate Maddever showed she is back to her best form, finishing tenth in the under 15 girls race in last weekend's South of England Cross Country Championships held over the demanding courses at Parliament Hill Fields in North London.
Competing against more than 200 runners, the current Cornwall Schools intermediate girls cross country champion, improved on 16th place in the same race last year, beating the runner up in the recent Cornwall Schools event, Abbie Williamson (Newquay and Par Athletic Club) by 14 places and 41 seconds.
Kate led Cornwall Athletic Club to an excellent team result. The club finished fifth out of 25 teams, with Jenny Almey (57th), showing a welcome return to form after a recent short term illness; Helen Fuller (83rd), is improving again after a long term illness and Kate Horam (92nd), continues to impress after only a couple of months at the club.
The Cornwall Schools minor girls champion, Lizzie Gard, made her mark for the second successive weekend. Competing in the u13 girls three kilometre race, Lizzie, who remains eligible for this race next year, showed what an exciting prospect she is, crossing the line in 22nd place, with almost 200 runners trailing in her wake.
Jordon West continues his slow but steady come back, with his fourth successive weekend race - this time over a longer 4.5 kilometre course. The English Schools junior boys 800 metre champion is certainly no lover of muddy cross country courses but worked hard for 38th position out of a large field of 237 runners.
Helen Pearson was the club's lone representative in the senior ladies race, which attracted almost 300 runners. Helen had worked herself into a high position in the top 30 when she turned an ankle. This hindered her progress and began losing ground, eventually finishing a creditable 44th.
