Plans to close a road used as a rat run between Bickland Water and Budock may not be as easy as the county council think.

Concerns over children's safety on the road known as Pool Field have been under discussion for some time.

There have also been numerous accidents at the junction with Bickland Water Road.

Now the county council has come up with a scheme whereby bollards will be placed at the entrance to a new cemetery near to Budock Church - halfway along the road. It will make the road into a cul-de-sac.

But on Monday night Budock parish councillors had "mixed views" on the scheme.

Council chairman John Bastin, whose home is alongside the road at Churchtown, said: "Everyone in this area is in favour of it.

"It's a very dangerous road."

Derek Williamson countered: "I'm not in favour of cutting Pool Field off. This isn't going to overcome the problem at the end of the lane. People still come across the junction, we might stop it this way, but I think we could have overcome it in other ways too.

"I think there should be a meeting in the village hall. There's always been a through road while I've been in the village and I have been here for 36 years."

Dismay was expressed at the length of time they had been given by the county council to consult villagers and some wanted more information about the road's accident record.

The county council put up notices nearby more than a week ago asking for public comments by February 16.

Those in favour of shutting off the road have been worried about children walking along the road to attend St Francis Primary School.

Bollards would allow access to pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders only.
