Ever wondered what a "toucan crossing" is or a "safe right turn?"

Three officers from Falmouth police station have the answers to these questions and more after recently completing the modern-day equivalent of the old cycling proficiency test.

Pc Andy Filkins, Pc Edd Clarke and Pc Steve Hawkins are now about to pass on their newly-acquired knowledge to school children across the district.

As qualified instructors, the trio will be in contact with local schools to encourage youngsters over the age of ten to sign up to the "Cyclewise" programme, being conducted in partnership with Cornwall county council.

"It's all to do with road safety and cycle maintenance," said Pc Filkins. "It's to make kids aware of the dangers that are around on the roads and also to do with confidence and competency."

It is hoped that as many children as possible will join, with groups of no more than ten being taught at one time.

They will be taken on approved routes, checked by the council and should finish the course knowing the answers to some very important road safety questions.
