ST BLAZEY 5 FALMOUTH TOWN 1
Following three successive defeats, St Blazey returned to winning ways with a comprehensive 5-1 victory over a patched up Falmouth Town.
With Duncan Ayres and Damian Stevens injured after the defeat at Liskeard, 'keeper Ryan Brokenshire was called up and Lee Patchett relegated to the bench. Two "temporary" players were given debuts, the Holsworthy duo of Rob Francis and Stuart Rickard.
The pattern of the game was obvious from the first minute when Graham Waters shot wide. Four minutes later Brokenshire made a good save from Steve Daly whose shot came following some good work by Dale Band. From the resultant corner, Martin Day cleared off the line.
The deadlock was broken on 10 minutes when after several lucky rebounds, Marcus Crocker shot low into the net.
St Blazey doubled their advantage ten minutes later. Some good work on the right from Ian Gosling, who put in a good cross, was met with a brilliant diving header by Mark Vercesi.
Town's first shot on goal came in the 24th minute which 16-year-old home 'keeper Steve Raven did well to hold on to the ball.
St Blazey were three goals to the good after 39 minutes.
Hesitation and a hint of offside surrounded Crocker's second goal, but it will probably be the easiest goal he'll ever score. A lack of communication between Brokenshire and Ash left Crocker the simple task of walking the ball into the empty net as the two players in question just watched as Town slipped 0-3 behind.
A glimmer of hope for Town came a minute before half time. Town won a corner and Wayne Brown's flag kick sailed straight into the net via the flapping hands of Raven.
Seven minutes into the second half St Blazey extended their lead to 4-1, Dale Band scoring with a header following another defensive mix up.
Seven minutes later and Band had scored his second and St Blazey's fifth with another simple goal. He cut in from the right, rounded the 'keeper and with a rather weak shot, he still managed to score in an almost empty net.
Matt Pellow and Matt Ellis replaced Brown and Rickard.
Gunning for his hat-trick, Marcus Crocker was denied on 64 minutes. When the cross came in from the left, the Saints' marksman hit a good shot which was blocked by Lee Fox before being grasped by Brokenshire.
Band could have had his hat-trick a minute later, but he shot wide from an excellent position and St Blazey could have made it 6-1 after a lapse in the visiting defence. A cross from Crocker was headed goalwards by Adrian Street, but luckily for Falmouth, Fox was on hand at the post to clear the danger.
Only one player was booked by Helston referee Rigas Gatzianidis. That was Day who got caught in the middle of a fracas with Ian Gosling and was the only one punished.
Ryan Brokenshire made two good saves in the final ten minutes and Falmouth's last effort came from Matt Pellow who shot low and hard but Raven was equal to it.
Town's next match is on Saturday when they entertain Tavistock (2.30 kick off).
