DESPITE the current uncertainty in farming, mostly due to the turmoil created by the CAP Mid Term Review and Defra's reluctance to nail it's colours to the flagpole, Red Ruby Devon breeders are confident of a rosy future for their cattle.

The Red Ruby Devon, a native breed whose roots go back to the 1500s, provide everything that the pundits believe will be essential when CAP reforms are finally introduced. The breed's natural ability to produce superior quality beef from natural grassland is legendary.

Their docility and ease of handling make them ideal cattle for low labour input units. The Red Ruby Devon has proven invaluable in organic and environmentally sensitive systems. The medium sized carcass produced as finished cattle, with it's marbled flesh, is without rival for retailing off the farm, thereby returning maximum profit to the farmer.

President of the Society, Mike Wright, said: "The British agricultural scene is turning one of its circles bringing native cattle to the forefront once again. The Red Ruby Devon has been bred for centuries to suit grassland of the Southwest peninsula."

As politics dictate a more extensive environmentally sustainable agriculture with increased farm diversification, the Red Ruby Devon's future is assured for some time to come.
