MORE than 330 people attended a Cancer Awareness Day at Carn Brea Leisure Centre in a bid to learn how to combat the deadly disease.
The event was organised jointly by the Kerrier Healthy Living Centre Project, Carn Brea Leisure Centre and nurses from the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust. The free exhibition aimed to provide both general health information and specialist cancer advice to the public.
Some 150 children, aged eight to 11, were invited from Stithians, Breage, Sithney and Portreath schools. There were also four groups of college students from Cornwall and Penwith. The youngsters took part in health-related activities such as checking pulses, writing anti-smoking poems and tasting fruit drinks
More than 200 adults also attended, browsing stalls manned by organisations such as Macmillan Nurses, Truro Cancer Support and the Stop Smoking Service. People travelled from as far as Hayle for the event.
The Kerrier Healthy Living Centre Project manager, Kerry Redington, said the day was a really big success
"If everyone who came took home a message about health, it was a fantastic achievement," she said. "The children put a huge amount of effort and energy into everything they did".
Event organisers hope to expand the project to involve even more schools next time.
